Congratulations! You have survived half of the week! How excited are you that the weekend is around the corner?
It is the same ol same ol for me, the weekends and weekdays are slowly bleeding into each other. I guess that is the life of being a mom. Luckily, thanks to having a food blog, I get to go out and do really cool things in San Francisco with my son! Like visit chocolate shops, coffee shops, brunch spots, you name it, it’s probably scheduled into my little teal book.
Last week, I was itching to get out of the house, to find somewhere to sit with Braedon, to take pictures and to just enjoy myself. I yelped the coffee shops near me in the South Beach portion of San Francisco and this place called Socola showed up.
The first thing that I thought when I saw the address, good, it’s in walking distance! I don’t have to get on Muni and Braedon and I can go for a long walk afterwards.
I strapped him into his stroller, it’s better for long walks than his carrier. His carrier tends to hurt my hips and back by the time I’m finished walking with him. Although, it is easier to get into shops and such.
I followed my Google Maps the half a mile to this coffee shop. Seeing that there was a sandwich board to point me in the right direction anyway.
I walked in, it was small, damn, should have brought the carrier. Oh well, I’ll know for next time.
I look at all of these lovely little truffles. I have no idea which ones I want.
Braedon is just looking around and smiling at the people who were sitting at the bar beside the espresso machine. He is such a flirt.
There aren’t many people in there today, I assume because it’s 3pm on an afternoon day and no one can just go out willy nilly for chocolate and coffee like me.
I start talking to the lady behind the counter, I believe from the pictures on Instagram, she is one of the owners! She asked how old Braedon was and I found out that she has a one year old. I told her about my friend’s baby turning one that same week! She was super nice and told Braedon to get mommy something good for Mother’s Day.
I chose 11 chocolates, I got a double of one and ordered a cold brew Four Barrel. You guys, this is my happy place. Chocolate and coffee?
Actually, I didn’t like chocolate until I got pregnant. But now, now I feel like a real girl. I love chocolate! It could be that Gareth always has chocolate around as well, he corrupted me! I swear!
I get the little teal box, I love them already, that’s my favorite color, my coffee, and I sit down on a couch in the corner.
Braedon wants out, so I get him out. I don’t think this is the most baby friendly place, but he was pretty content there. He loved standing on the couch and floor and trying to drink mommy’s coffee.
Their story is on the back of the box, it’s so good, so I take a photograph. I try to decide whether I’m going to take a bunch of photos there or just take the chocolates home and do them at home.
I do both.
It’s hard to take decent pictures with a baby though, he’s quite wiggly right now.
There are 2 tables outside, 2 inside, a bar, a comfy looking chair, and the couch that we chose to sit at. It was very open, it makes me feel at home, not like a ‘modern’ coffee shop, which are all so sterile. I mean, when I go get coffee, I want some kind of culture, not to feel like I’m at a hospital!
There are alpacas on a shelf, not real ones, but a lot of them! And then I realized that their logo was an alpaca. That is awesome! I used to love llamas and alpacas. I think they just look adorable. I definitely will get a t-shirt next time I’m there, because, well alpacas and chocolate, duh.
The coffee was good, but I wouldn’t expect less from Four Barrel, they just know what they’re doing when they roast their beans.
Braedon played a little more, I finished my coffee, took a few more photos and then headed home with the decadent treats in my bag.
Socola offers you several ways to buy their chocolates- online or in store. You can get 6, 12, 24, and even single ones I bet. They have pastries, teas, and other snacks. If you go online they have these awesome San Francisco painted ones that I wish they would have had in store, oh well, I’m going to order them for a friend in the UK anyway.
I obviously chose the 12, even though now I wish I would have gotten 24.
My favorite was the passion fruit. The dark chocolate mixed with the sweet and tanginess of the passion fruit is perfect.
Gareth loved the dark chocolate ganache, he said it was so smooth and creamy. And it wasn’t too dark, because if you made it 90%, well it would just be too bitter to eat.
The raspberry was pretty good, but I’ve been eating so many raspberries lately trying to perfect the cupcake brains that I made.
The peanut butter and jelly one had a weird consistency, but good taste. I just don’t think I would get it again because of the consistency.
The earl grey was good, it had a great tea flavor, but the chocolate definitely dominated the tea flavor. I would probably get this again if I were drinking an earl grey, because then I would have something that would bring out the tea flavor a bit more.
I’m looking in my notes about all of the truffles that I got and I see ‘Matcha-’ I am obsessed with matcha, but it really can be an overpowering flavor. This was perfect. It was like, well I would buy a box of these and eat them every day.
The stout chocolates were what I got two of, both Gareth and I tried them. They were malty with hints of cherry, I really liked them.
The Siracha one was not my cup of tea. I did not like it at all. I like chili and chocolate together usually, but Siracha is just, I couldn’t do it.
I had the regular salted caramel truffle, I thought it was good. I liked the caramel flavor.
Gareth had the burnt chocolate, burnt caramel. He wasn’t impressed with it. He said he didn’t get enough caramel flavor in it.
I will be going back there in the future and I would definitely recommend it to anyone in San Francisco, especially if you are in the Financial District or Embarcadero region.
Next time I go, I hope to bring a book, get a large black coffee, and a few chocolates and just relax for an hour or two. It really does have that kind of feel for you.
Friday is MomNoms after dark. It’s getting so hot, because it’s summer, that I’m going to offer you an awesome recipe for a daiquiri that will cool you off in this summer-like heat. Gareth will enjoy testing all of the flavor combinations that I will try until then!
