Happy Birthday to Me

It’s Wednesday, once again, this week has gone by entirely to quickly.

Yesterday was my birthday! Yay!  Only, not really, it did not quite feel like my birthday.  I was more worried about Braedon all day than celebrating.  I don’t mind that really, I love being a mom and he’s is teething really bad, so it’s selfish to want to celebrate or feel a certain way when my kid is in pain.

It’s been a really long week for us already!  We went with a friend to Berkeley on Monday to visit another friend.  On Bart that trip seemed longer than it should have been, plus I was carrying B.  I guess you can say that I got my workout on Monday!

This is a little bit of my Wednesday Wisdom for you.  It's something that I have to keep telling myself every day.

Yesterday, my friend treated me to a trip to Chinatown.  I’m going to do a full blog on Chinatown in the near future, because it’s so amazing. But for now, I’ll describe my little birthday trip.  Braedon was strapped to me, he’s grumpy from his teeth hurting him, so I probably should have just stayed home, but Gareth told me to go out.

I met Chloe at her building and we hopped on the bus together.  I always get so overwhelmed at the crowd when I’m in Chinatown.  It’s like a whole different city when you get over there.  Our first stop was this little shop.  I needed wonton wrappers for my dinner that I was making.  I loved everything in there!  I wanted to take everything home with me, but Gareth probably would have been mad.  We came out of there with Pocky sticks, wonton wrappers, black sesame balls, and I think that’s it!

Then we made our way to a little bakery and got egg tarts.  They were so good.  They were the consistency of jelly, with a sweet taste, on a puff pastry.  I loved it, Braedon loved it more.  He started full on eating it out of my hand.

Next, we had to stop at the butcher to get pork belly, because, well I had to.  I’m so glad that Chloe knows Mandarin, because I was lost.  I was drooling over the cuts of meat that they had, though.  So fresh, so perfect in every way.  She said, “You know you’re a chef when you drool over raw meat.”

Guilty.

We stopped at one final shop to get kimchi and quails eggs, again for the dinner that I made last night.  I have never seen quails eggs so cheap and gorgeous.  I really need to go back to Chinatown.

We were hungry by this point and wanted Dim Sum.  There was a really long line for one of the places that she likes, so we went to Delicious Dim Sum instead.  It was nice because there was a table for us to sit at and Braedon was asleep by that point.

We had shrimp, pork, vegetable, and shrimp & pork Dim Sum.  I have never been so full or satisfied off of 4 little dumplings in my life.  They had amazing flavor!

Of course being the women we are, before we headed back, we had to stop for bubble tea.  I don’t tend to maneuver from my usual of matcha milk tea with boba, so that’s what I got.  Chloe got a lychee green tea with boba, she said it was really good!

Back on the bus Braedon and I go, time to get home.

Gareth had come home to get a delivery that both of us had completely forgotten about.  He had me a present waiting.  It was a solid state drive for my photos.  I am so lucky to have him.  My computer has been running slow for a while and I really needed this SSD.

He gave us a kiss and left and I got B down for a short, but needed nap.  The rest of the day, I pretty much just snuggled up with Braedon, because he was in pain, and that seemed like the perfect day to me.

"Daddy, why is the cupcake on fire? And why are you singing?"

A little bit before Gareth got home, I started dinner.  Bulgogi tacos with caramelized kimchi and a spicy cilantro aioli.  Don’t worry, if you think that sounds amazing, that is Monday’s blog! :D

Gareth loved it.  He actually had seconds, that pretty much never happens.

We get Braedon down early, he’s just so tired at this point.

I come into the living room and there is a small wrapped box sitting on the table.  I asked him what it was and he said, “something practical.”  That made me laugh because it’s all practical to him.

I love my new trigger!

I love my new trigger!

It was a remote trigger for my camera!  I’ve been asking for one of these for a long time!  It makes me so happy!

I lay in his lap for a while and tell him how it didn’t feel like my birthday.  I told him, I guess that is what happens when you have kids.  I had been so worried about B that I couldn’t just live in the time.  I know that is something that I need to work on, but I’ll take it one day at a time.

I get up to go to the bathroom and then get a glass of wine, open the fridge, and there is a bigger box.  I said, “Gareth, what did you do?”  He said he had no idea what I was talking about.

WTF is this in my fridge?

WTF is this in my fridge?

I pour my wine, open up an anchor steam for him, and bring the package to the couch and sit down.  I open it up and almost screamed.  It is the Sigma 35mm f1.4 that I have been dreaming about for the longest time.

Oh my god, that glass though

I said that this wasn’t practical, he said, “are you going to use it?” Well, duh.  “Then it’s practical.”

The rest of the night we looked at Heath ceramics to see what I could get with the awesome gift card that my best mom friends got me.  I think I decided on a 3 piece set in a dark color, because it’ll look so good in photographs.  We also snacked on the Try the World box that they got me.

Aren't they gorgeous?

Although it didn’t feel like a good day and I was down for a lot of it, thanks to my friends and Gareth, it was so fantastic.  I’m so lucky to have them in my life.

Tonight I’m going to a new restaurant to get some shots for Friday’s blog.  I am going by myself, so this should be, well terrifying.  Maybe I need a little time along though, plus I’ll get to play with my new glass!

Before I forget!  I’m giving away one of my favorite cookbooks!  It’s by another wonderful blogger who I have been following for a long time! She is the Minimalist Baker and her cookbook is fantastic!
