Best Good Luck Black Eyed Peas

When I was growing up we always had black eyed peas on New Year’s Day.  My mom told me that it would bring us good luck for the year if we did so.

Have you ever heard of this?

It’s apparently a Southern thing.

If you eat black eyed peas on the first day of the New Year you will be brought prosperity.

I am a sucker for traditions like this.  I want to pass them down to my own family so that we have something to look forward to every year.

Do you have any traditions like this?

I wanted to do things a little differently with these black eyed peas, though.

My mom would slow cook them with ham and some salt and pepper, nothing really elaborate.  And if you know me, that’s just not my style.  I want to get flavor packed into every dish.

So, I use the Instant Pot to make these peas, which cuts down on hours of waiting, add in some of my favorite seasonings to really bring out the flavor of the peas and pork.  I also add in some diced tomatoes for more texture.

Good Luck Black Eyed Peas

Believe me, if you’re eating this black eyed pea dish, you’re going to have a good year, because it’s starting out perfectly.
